Lanaudière

The area, in brief

Construction accounts for 12% of total employment in Lanaudière, nearly double the Quebec average (7%), per the Portrait socioéconomique from the Quebec government (quebec.ca). The region shows projected population growth of 3.8% between 2024 and 2029 — bucking the province-wide slowdown expected elsewhere — which supports sustained demand for housing and infrastructure.

Good to know

Your questions, answered.

I have my DEP in Heavy Equipment Mechanics. How do I get into construction?

With your DEP, you can apply for your apprentice competency certificate (CCA) from the CCQ as soon as you have a job guarantee from an employer (minimum 150 hours over 3 months). From there, you're looking at 6,000 apprenticeship hours split across three periods of 2,000 hours each, then the provincial qualification exam to become a journeyperson.

Will I have to work far from home?

It's possible: 42% of heavy equipment mechanics work in a region different from where they live. Civil engineering and roads sites, which make up 84% of the trade's work volume, are often out in the regions. It's a reality of the trade, but it can also mean interesting projects and good per diems.

What does a journeyperson heavy equipment mechanic earn?

As of May 2025, the journeyperson hourly rate is $47.57/h in civil engineering and roads, $46.61/h in industrial and institutional-commercial. Journeypersons who worked at least 500 hours in the year averaged an annual salary of $98,873 in 2024. Check the official grid at ccq.org for current rates.
