The trade

What a painter does.

Painters prepare and finish surfaces on any type of construction, applying one or more coats of film-forming compounds — paint, varnish, lacquer. They also cover wall surfaces with wallpaper or similar materials, install reinforcements, corner beads, and accessories, and fill joints on wall panels. The trade calls for precision, a sharp eye for colour, and the ability to work cleanly and at height.

CCQ rate

$42.81 – $47.89 / hour (journeyperson, by sector, April 26, 2026)

Hourly rates are set by the collective agreements of Québec's construction industry and vary by sector: $42.81/h in light residential, $47.00/h in heavy residential, $47.39/h in institutional-commercial and industrial and $47.89/h in civil engineering and roads (journeyperson rate, effective April 26, 2026). Apprentices earn a percentage of that rate depending on their apprenticeship period. Official grids published by the ACQ (residential and institutional-commercial-industrial) and the ACRGTQ (civil engineering and roads).

Why it's tight

The pool is thin. Speed makes the difference.

The CCQ rates job prospects for painters as excellent. Even though demand is stable, low labour availability, significant aging, high turnover, and too few new graduates are creating sustained needs. In 2024, 6,957 painters were active on Quebec job sites and 1,960 companies were recruiting. Only 683 new apprentices were admitted that year, below the 2020-2023 annual average of 714. Aging is pronounced among journeypersons: their average age reaches 47.4, and 34% are 55 or older, pointing to a wave of upcoming retirements. In 2024, women made up 27.47% of the trade's workforce (1,911 active women workers).

What we check

Before it lands on your desk.

  • Valid CCQ competency card (apprentice or journeyperson) — mandatory to work on job sites governed by the R-20 Act
  • ASP Construction card (general health and safety on job sites) — required to obtain the CCQ competency certificate
  • Completed DEP in Building Painting (5336) or Commercial and Residential Painting (5836), or a CCQ-recognized entry path
  • Precision, a sharp eye for colour, and the ability to work at height and keep a clean finish
  • Experience in the institutional-commercial sector, which accounts for 69% of the trade's work volume

Competency card

How a painter qualifies.

Painters must hold a CCQ competency card. The apprentice certificate (CCA) is issued after completing the DEP in Building Painting (program 5336, 900 hours) — also offered in English as Commercial and Residential Painting (5836) — and presenting a job guarantee of at least 150 hours over 3 consecutive months with a CCQ-registered employer. The apprenticeship then covers 3 periods of 2,000 hours each (6,000 hours total), after which the apprentice can sit the provincial qualification exam; passing it leads to the journeyperson certificate (CCC). The apprentice-to-journeyperson ratio is 1:1 in residential, and 2 journeypersons per apprentice in industrial, institutional-commercial, and civil engineering and roads (a second apprentice is allowed if one of them is in their final period or is a woman).

Frequently asked questions

Hiring a painter, plainly.

How many apprentice painters can I have per journeyperson on my site?

The ratio on the books depends on the sector. In residential, it's 1 journeyperson per apprentice. In industrial, institutional-commercial, and civil engineering and roads, the ratio is 2 journeypersons per apprentice. On any given work day on site, the proportion must be at least 1 journeyperson per apprentice; for each journeyperson you employ, you can supervise one additional apprentice up to a maximum of 2 apprentices, provided one of them is in their final apprenticeship period or is a woman. Always check the ratios that apply to your sector on ccq.org. Managing these ratios well helps you maximize your training capacity without compromising your timelines, in a market where 1,960 companies were hiring painters in 2024.

How do I check that a painter I want to hire is in good standing with the CCQ?

You can verify a worker's competency certificate directly through CCQ's online services. A painter without a valid certificate (apprentice CCA or journeyperson CCC) can't legally work on a job site governed by the R-20 Act. Also confirm the worker holds their ASP Construction card (general health and safety on job sites), a mandatory requirement to obtain the CCQ competency certificate. Finally, make sure the candidate has experience in the sector you need — 69% of painters' work volume is in institutional-commercial, so a mostly residential background doesn't necessarily carry the same experience. With 6,957 active painters and 1,960 companies recruiting in 2024, the market is competitive: a quick check up front saves you delays and compliance issues.

Is it hard to recruit qualified painters right now?

Yes, the pool is under pressure. The CCQ rates the trade's job prospects as excellent precisely because low availability, aging, high turnover, and a shortage of graduates are creating sustained needs. In 2024, 1,960 companies were hiring painters against 6,957 active workers, and only 683 new apprentices were admitted — below the 2020-2023 average of 714 per year. Among journeypersons, the average age reaches 47.4 and 34% are 55 or older, pointing to upcoming retirements. Effective approaches: post on the CCQ's next-generation workforce board, reach out to schools offering the DEP in Building Painting, and work with a construction-focused recruiting agency that knows the available pool of journeypersons.

Why Aplomb

Why not a generalist agency?

Hiring a painter isn't something you wing. CCQ specialization changes what you get.

Card verified

We read the CCQ card.

We verify the competency card — apprentice (CCA) or journeyperson (CCC) — before we send you anyone. A generalist doesn't know the difference; on the job site, it changes everything.

Ratios & sectors

We know your ratios.

Your sectors — institutional-commercial, residential, civil engineering and roads, industrial — each have their own apprentice/journeyperson ratio rules. A wrong ratio on the books means a stopped job site. We know them.

Construction only

Zero scatter.

We recruit CCQ-carded construction trades in Québec — not 40 industries at once. It's the talent pool we work every single day.
