Competency card

How to become a CCQ-carded pipefitter.

The pipefitter trade is regulated by the CCQ. Entry starts with the apprentice competency certificate (CCA), earned after completing the DEP in Plumbing-Heating (5333, 1,680 hours) and a job guarantee of at least 150 hours over 3 consecutive months with a CCQ-registered employer. The apprenticeship covers 4 periods of 2,000 hours each (8,000 hours total), after which the apprentice sits the provincial qualification exam. Passing it leads to the journeyperson competency certificate (CCC). Apprentice-to-journeyperson ratio in residential: 1:1. In institutional-commercial, industrial, and civil engineering: 2 journeypersons required per apprentice on site (a journeyperson can supervise 2 apprentices if one is in their final period or one is a woman).

Outlook

The pipefitter market, in 2025.

The CCQ projects average annual needs of 16,000 new workers for 2025-2029 across the industry, with qualified labour availability rated low. In 2024, 1,701 companies were hiring pipefitters, against only 639 new apprentices admitted into the trade that year. The number of annual graduates in construction trades isn't enough to meet job site demand, per the CCQ. Add to that an aging workforce, high turnover (nearly 35% of workers leave the industry after five years), and a steady pipeline of major projects (Hydro-Québec infrastructure, large-scale Greater Montréal builds).

Frequently asked questions

The pipefitter trade, plainly.

I've got my Plumbing-Heating DEP. How do I get my CCQ card to work on job sites?

You submit proof of your DEP to the CCQ along with a job guarantee from a CCQ-registered employer for a minimum of 150 hours over 3 consecutive months. That gets you the apprentice competency certificate (CCA). From there, you log 4 periods of 2,000 apprenticeship hours on site, then pass the provincial qualification exam to become a journeyperson. Make sure you also have your ASP Construction health and safety card in hand, since it's required alongside the DEP for CCQ registration. Given that 1,701 companies were hiring pipefitters in 2024 against only 639 new apprentices admitted, employers offering job guarantees are generally easy to find once your paperwork is in order. Keep in mind the CCQ recognizes two specialties in this trade, plumber and heating equipment installer, so confirm which one your employer registers you under.

Which sector will I work in most as a pipefitter?

In 2024, 72% of hours worked by pipefitters in Quebec were in institutional-commercial — hospitals, schools, office buildings, shopping centres. Residential is 16% of hours, industrial 9%, and civil engineering 3%. That's reflected directly in the CCQ's skills requirement for the trade, which lists institutional-commercial experience as a key asset given it accounts for the bulk of hours. Wherever you land, expect wage rates to vary quite a bit by sector and apprenticeship period, ranging from $23.93 to $50.87 an hour as of April 26, 2026. That heavy weighting toward institutional-commercial holds regardless of which of the trade's two CCQ specialties you pursue — plumber or heating equipment installer — since both credentials are needed across hospitals, schools, and office towers. The CCQ has also flagged an aging workforce and roughly 35% turnover within five years as ongoing pressures on the trade.

Is this a stable trade? Is there work right now?

Yes. In 2024, 1,701 companies were looking for pipefitters in Quebec. The CCQ projects needs of 16,000 workers per year across the industry through 2029, and qualified labour availability is rated low. It's one of the trades where finding work is generally easier than in many others. Part of the pressure comes from turnover: nearly 35% of pipefitters leave the industry within five years, on top of an aging workforce that's driving retirements. With major projects like Hydro-Québec infrastructure and large-scale builds in Greater Montréal in the pipeline, that steady churn keeps job guarantees relatively easy to land for new apprentices. Graduate numbers from vocational programs simply aren't keeping pace with job site demand, per the CCQ, which is part of why finding a job guarantee tends to be straightforward for anyone finishing their DEP in Plumbing-Heating.

Sector breakdown, regional mobility and apprenticeship progression figures are drawn from Commission de la construction du Québec data.
