Hourly rates are set by the collective agreements of Québec's construction industry and vary by sector: $47.85/h in light residential, $50.20/h in heavy residential, $51.20/h in institutional-commercial and industrial and $51.74/h in civil engineering and roads (journeyperson rate, effective April 26, 2026). The trade
Roofers install roof coverings — hot-mopped bitumen and gravel, liquid elastomeric and thermoplastic membranes, or various types of shingles — on commercial, institutional, and residential buildings. They prepare the roof deck, repair and insulate roofing systems, then handle hoisting, material handling, tear-off, waterproofing, fastening, spreading, and welding work to make the finished roof durable and watertight.
Competency card
How to become a CCQ-carded roofer.
Roofers must hold a CCQ competency card to work on job sites governed by the R-20 Act. The usual path in is the vocational diploma (DEP) in Roof Covering Installation (program 5351, 630 hours), which qualifies you for the apprentice competency certificate (CCA) once you present a job guarantee of at least 150 hours over 3 consecutive months with a CCQ-registered employer. The apprentice then completes two apprenticeship periods of 2,000 hours each (4,000 hours total), then sits the provincial qualification exam (60 questions, 3 hours, 60% pass threshold) to earn the journeyperson competency certificate (CCC). The apprentice-to-journeyperson ratio is 1:1 in residential; in institutional-commercial, industrial, and civil engineering, the ratio on the books is 2 journeypersons per apprentice.
Outlook
The roofer market, in 2025.
In 2024, 6,559 roofers were active on Quebec job sites and 1,019 companies were recruiting at the same time — a sign of a very active market. The CCQ rates job prospects for roofers as excellent. The average age of journeypersons is 42.1 (36.8 across the whole trade, apprentices included), pointing to a wave of retirements in the coming years. That year, 707 new apprentices were admitted into the trade — a decent influx of new talent, but one that needs to keep pace with job site demand. The institutional-commercial sector accounts for 82% of hours worked, driven by the construction and re-roofing of large-scale commercial and institutional roofs.

Frequently asked questions
The roofer trade, plainly.
I've got my DEP in Roof Covering Installation. How do I get my CCQ card to work on job sites?
With your DEP in Roof Covering Installation (5351, 630 hours), you can apply for your apprentice competency certificate (CCA) as soon as you have a job guarantee from a CCQ-registered employer — at least 150 hours over 3 consecutive months. From there, you log two apprenticeship periods of 2,000 hours each, 4,000 hours total on site, then pass the provincial qualification exam (60 questions, 3 hours, 60% pass threshold) to become a journeyperson (CCC). The market is in your favour: in 2024, 6,559 roofers were active in Quebec and 1,019 companies were hiring, with the CCQ rating job prospects as excellent. You've got good odds of quickly finding the employer to sign your job guarantee.
Which sector will I work in most often as a roofer?
In 2024, 82% of hours worked by roofers in Quebec were in the institutional-commercial sector — roofs on schools, hospitals, office buildings, and shopping centres. Residential accounts for 15% of hours, industrial 2%, and civil engineering 1%. In practice, you'll spend most of your time on large-scale commercial roofs: installing hot-mopped bitumen and gravel, elastomeric and thermoplastic membranes, plus waterproofing and welding work. That dominant institutional-commercial sector is also why the trade stays busy season after season. With 1,019 companies hiring roofers in 2024, opportunities in this sector aren't in short supply, no matter which region you start in.
Is it a good time to get into the roofing trade in Quebec?
Yes. The CCQ rates job prospects for roofers as excellent. In 2024, 6,559 roofers were active and 1,019 companies were hiring in Quebec. That year, 707 new apprentices were admitted into the trade — a real influx, but job site demand stays strong, driven by the institutional-commercial sector, which accounts for 82% of hours. Also worth knowing: only 10% of roofers travel between regions for work, versus 16% on average across all construction trades. It's a trade where you can often find work close to home.
